Complex Parallel Operation with Parametrizable Control Devices

During planning of complex power stations, a lot of aspects need to be assessed and the optimal concept for the customer has to be chosen.

In our application we compared the following aspects:

  • investment costs for controlling devices
  • cabling work between the switchboards
  • fail-safety (redundancy)

The requirements of the building specify the procedure: The emergency power generators with the control switchboards will be installed in a container, outside a building. All of them need to communicate with the central control panel inside the building. That's why we chose the „Woodward Concept“.

The „Woodward Concept“ consists of the following components:

Genset Control Panel:

The genset control panel consists of a Woodward easYgen 3400XT- P2 control unit (installed on the mounting plate), a Woodward RP-3000XT remote panel and a HPS DIS2-1 differential protection device.

Central Control Panel:

The central control panel consists of:

  • two Woodward LS-521 control devices, to control and monitor the mains supplies
  • two Woodward LS-521 control devices, to control and monitor the generator couple circuit-breaker
  • four Woodward LS-511 control devices, to monitor the couple circuit-breaker
  • one proconX ESENET interface converter to send all of the plant data of the Woodward control devices to central building management systems by Modbus TCP/IP

Funktion

  • All of the Woodward controllers are connected with each other by CANBUS and send functional relevant information. The parallel operation can be expanded from two to up to six emergency power gensets by switching on/off the individual segments and the relevant grounding switches.
  • Important information will be sent from central control panel to the genset control panels by "LS5-flags" (without additional cabling). With these "LS5-flags" we are able to initiate the emergency power operation as well as load test and also run-up synchronization for each genset.
  • By the individual segments the Woodward LS-521 control devices of the generator couple circuit-breaker / mains supplies detect the state of the whole plant and control the frequency during synchronization and  active power supply of the emergency power gensets during mains parallel operation.
  • Due to a split of the whole function into several control devices, a failure of one device does not result in the loss of the complete function. Seperate functions will be possible.

Even complex applications can be realized by compact controllers like with the "Woodward Concepts". During tendering stage the different solutions should be compared technically and economically .
